Comparing efficacy of a sweep net and a dip method for collection of mosquito larvae in large bodies of water in South Africa [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

چکیده
In this study we tested an alternative method for collecting mosquito larvae called the sweep net catch method and compared its efficiency to that of the traditional dip method. The two methods were compared in various water bodies within Kruger National Park and Lapalala Wilderness area, South Africa. The sweep net catch method performed 5 times better in the collection of larvae and equally as well as the dip method in the collection of Anopheles larvae (p =8.58 x 10 ). Based on 15 replicates the collector’s experience Culex level did not play a significant role in the relative numbers of larvae collected using either method. This simple and effective sweep net catch method will greatly improve the mosquito larval sampling capacity in the field setting. Katherine K. Background & Aims of the Study: Malaria is an infectious disease by fever, chills and anemia; and splenomegaly genus Plasmodium parasite is the agent of it. One of the easiest and least expensive methods for preventionof this disease is removing the vector that usually has been done by insecticides and chemical pesticides, but now days due to the harmful effects of toxic chemic...
متن کاملComparison of sampling efficacy of sweeping and dipping for Aedes aegypti larvae in tires.
A sweep net with a flexible plastic frame was compared to a dipper for sampling efficacy for Aedes aegypti larvae in different-sized tires. When known numbers of mosquito larvae were introduced into tires, from 2 to 6.8 times more larvae were recovered by sweeping than by dipping. Sediment in the tires significantly reduced the recovery of larvae by both methods. Sampling efficacy was affected ...

متن کاملMosquito biodiversity patterns around urban environments in South-central okinawa island, Japan.
Okinawa is the largest, most urbanized, and densely populated island in the Ryukyus Archipelago, where mosquito species diversity has been thoroughly studied. However, the south-central Okinawa mosquito fauna has been relatively poorly studied. Here, we present results from a mosquito faunal survey in urban environments of Nishihara city, south-central Okinawa. Mosquitoes were sampled biweekly,...
